📜 Wisconsin E-Bike Laws – What You Need to Know

As electric bikes (e-bikes) continue to grow in popularity across Wisconsin, it's important to understand the rules that keep riders safe and compliant. Whether you're new to e-bikes or a seasoned rider, here’s a quick guide to Wisconsin's e-bike regulations:

🚲 E-Bike Classifications in Wisconsin

Wisconsin defines e-bikes under three classes:

  • Class 1: Pedal-assist only, with motor support up to 20 mph.
  • Class 2: Throttle-assist (no pedaling required), motor support also up to 20 mph.
  • Class 3: Pedal-assist only, but with motor support up to 28 mph.

Each class has different usage rules and access to specific trails or paths.

✅ General Rules for E-Bike Riders

  • No License or Registration Required
E-bikes are treated like traditional bicycles—no need for a driver’s license, registration, or insurance.
  • Motor Power Limit
E-bikes must have a motor output of 750 watts or less.
  • Minimum Age
Riders must be at least 16 years old to operate a Class 3 e-bike.
  • Helmet Requirements
Helmets are not legally required for any class of e-bike in Wisconsin, but always encouraged for safety. An E-bike certified helmet will be provided FREE of charge to ensure the safety of our customers.

🛣️ Where You Can Ride

  • Roads & Bike Lanes
All e-bikes are allowed on roads and designated bike lanes.
  • Sidewalks
E-bikes are not permitted on sidewalks.
  • Trails
Some linear bicycle touring trails allow e-bikes (max speed 15 mph), but mountain bike trails typically do not.

Always check with your local municipality, as cities and counties may have additional regulations or restrictions.

🗺️ Local Tip:

If you're unsure about where to ride, contact your local city or county officials or visit the Wisconsin DNR site for updated information on trails and bike routes.
