Safety is our TOP PRIORITY!

  1. Always Wear a Leash AND a Life Jacket
The leash keeps your board close; the PFD keeps you afloat.
  2. Know the Weather & Water Conditions
Wind and waves can quickly become dangerousโ€”check before heading out.
  3. Launch Safely in Calm Water
Start in knee-deep water, keeping the board steady as you mount.
  4. Use Proper Paddling Form
Stand with knees slightly bent, feet shoulder-width apart, and paddle with your core.
  5. Stay Close to Shore
Especially for beginners, it's safer to remain near land.
  6. Learn How to Fall Safely
Fall away from the board and re-mount from the side.
  7. Sun Protection & Hydration
Use sunscreen, wear a hat or sunglasses, and drink water regularly.
  8. Be Courteous & Leave No Trace
Respect others on the water and clean up after yourself.

๐Ÿ„ Paddleboard Requirements โ€“ Wisconsin Law

Whether you're exploring inland lakes or paddling connected waterways like Bark Bay Slough, hereโ€™s what you must have on your paddleboard to comply with Wisconsin and federal boating laws:

โœ… 1. Life Jacket (PFD)

  • One U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable life jacket (Type I, II, III, or appropriate Type V) is required per person.
  • Must be properly sized, in good condition, and readily accessible.
  • Children under 13 must wear a life jacket at all times.
  • Inflatable belt PFDs are allowed if USCG-approved and worn correctly.

โœ… 2. Sound-Producing Device

  • Carry a whistle or air horn to signal your presence.
  • Required by lawโ€”your voice does not count as a signaling device.

โœ… 3. White Light (After Sunset)

  • If paddling between sunset and sunrise, a white light (such as a waterproof flashlight or headlamp) is required.
  • This helps others see you and avoid collisions.

โœ… 4. Visual Distress Signals (VDS)

  • Required only at night and only on federally controlled waters (e.g., Lake Superior, Bark Bay Slough).
  • Must carry USCG-approved electronic SOS lights or flares.

โŒ Not Required:

  • Registration is not needed for non-motorized paddleboards.
  • Throwable PFDs (Type IV) are not required.
